Low Rpm DC Motor
What is a Low Rpm DC Motor?
A brushed DC gear motor is an integrated drive assembly combining a permanent-magnet brushed DC motor with a gearbox. The motor utilizes carbon brushes and a commutator for mechanical commutation and incorporates a gear train-such as spur, planetary, or worm gears-to convert high-speed, low-torque output into low-speed, high-torque power.
Equipment engineers designing small-scale, intermittent automation mechanisms often face challenges: using a bare brushed motor directly results in excessive speed and insufficient torque, while sourcing the motor and gearbox separately entails time-consuming on-site assembly, alignment, and calibration, as well as the risk of coaxial misalignment leading to vibration and premature wear. This integrated gear motor comes fully assembled and calibrated from the factory; it requires only a DC power supply to deliver low-speed, high-torque output. It offers a simple control scheme, allowing for easy speed regulation via PWM voltage control and convenient switching between forward and reverse rotation.

-
Reduces speed to amplify torque; delivers high load-bearing capacity at low speeds.
Uses a gear set to reduce output speed while multiplying output torque. Capable of delivering sustained torque at low speeds, it is ideal for applications requiring startup under load-such as pushing heavy objects, operating sluice gates, or driving roller conveyors-without the need for a high-power motor.
-
Simple drive control and low overall electronic control costs.
It utilizes brushed DC drive logic, employing PWM for voltage and speed regulation, with forward and reverse rotation achieved simply by swapping power leads. It eliminates the need for position sensors or specialized, complex drive units; the control board design is straightforward, the prototype development cycle is short, and the investment in control hardware is lower.

A variety of gearbox types are available to suit different operating conditions: spur gear models offer high cost-effectiveness and are suitable for general intermittent loads; planetary gear models provide higher torque density and a compact design; and worm gear models feature self-locking capabilities-maintaining the load position during power loss-making them ideal for lifting and gate mechanisms.

Q1: Does the gearbox backlash of a brushed DC gear motor increase with use?
A1: When the motor is properly selected and operates under stable, intermittent conditions, the increase in backlash is gradual. However, prolonged exposure to shock loads, overloading, or installation misalignment causes wear on the gear tooth surfaces, leading to a progressive increase in backlash. Incorporating a torque safety margin during selection and ensuring installation rigidity can help delay the deterioration of backlash.
Q2: Can the self-locking function of a worm gear mechanism prevent the load from falling?
A2: The self-locking feature of a worm gear is suitable only for maintaining a static position; it cannot serve as a safety brake. Factors such as vibration, shock, and temperature rise can cause the self-locking function to fail. For lifting mechanisms that pose safety risks, an additional electromagnetic brake must be installed.
Q3: Does the temperature rise in a brushed DC gear motor originate from the motor or the gearbox?
A3: The temperature rise stems from two sources: on the motor side, it primarily results from carbon brush commutation and winding heat; in the gearbox, it arises from friction during gear meshing. During prolonged full-load operation, heat from both sources accumulates. When selecting a motor, it is essential to calculate the continuous load to prevent overheating caused by this combined heat generation.
