What is the Steel Sprockets?

Steel sprockets are chain drive components made from carbon steel or alloy steel. Unlike cast iron or powder metallurgy sprockets, they rely on the high tensile strength and toughness of steel to transmit torque. In the entire chain drive system, the steel sprocket withstands repeated compression, impact, and friction from the chain rollers, making it a rigid load-bearing component that directly determines the service life of the transmission system.

Cast iron sprockets are brittle and prone to tooth breakage under heavy loads; powder metallurgy sprockets are only suitable for light loads and low speeds. Steel sprockets are suitable for most industrial continuous operation scenarios. The hardness of the tooth surface can be changed through tempering and high-frequency quenching, balancing the toughness of the sprocket body with the wear resistance of the teeth.

Types of Steel Sprockets

 

1. 45# Rolled Steel Sprockets (Machine-Made)

The base material is high-quality 45# carbon structural steel. It is made from bar stock or plate, CNC machined to its shape, and the teeth are hobbed. The tooth surface undergoes high-frequency quenching. High cost-performance ratio and short delivery time.

Suitable for: automated production lines, packaging machinery, textile equipment, general conveying equipment, and medium-load, normal-temperature conditions; not suitable for long-term high-impact, high-temperature, heavy-load mining conditions. Available in single-row, double-row, and triple-row configurations, supporting finished hole, blank hole, and shoulder structure.

 

2. 42CrMo Forged Steel Sprockets

Using 42CrMo alloy steel forged blanks, forging eliminates internal porosity and looseness defects, resulting in a dense grain structure. Overall heat treatment and high-frequency quenching of the teeth. Impact resistance and fatigue resistance are far superior to ordinary 45# steel sprockets, and it is less prone to tooth root cracks under alternating loads.

Suitable for: Mining conveyors, hoisting equipment, scraper conveyors, port machinery, and construction machinery; ideal for 24/7 heavy-duty impact applications. The preferred steel sprocket for heavy-duty equipment.

 

3. Raw Hole Steel Sprocket (Semi-finished Steel Sprocket)

The teeth and outer diameter are fully machined, with machining allowance left for the inner hole. Customers can bore and machine the keyway themselves according to their shaft specifications after returning the sprocket to the factory.

Advantages: Compatible with various shaft diameters, reducing inventory pressure; commonly used by equipment manufacturers for bulk purchases; standard specifications are readily available.

 

4. Finished Hole Steel Sprocket with Keyway

The inner hole is pre-bored, keyway is machined, and set screw holes are machined at the factory. Ready for immediate assembly and use upon receipt, no secondary machining required. Fast delivery, suitable for repair and replacement projects and small spare parts procurement.

 

5. Steel Sprocket with Shoulder/Boss

A boss is machined on one or both sides of the sprocket body to limit axial chain deviation and prevent chain slippage. It is often used in inclined conveying, lifting equipment, high-speed transmission, and in situations where the chain is prone to slippage.

- Separate Heat Treatment Processes: Hardened Tooth Surface, Tough Wheel Body Retained

Steel sprockets are most vulnerable to overall hardening. While overall hardening results in very hard teeth, the wheel body becomes brittle, leading to tooth breakage under impact. Our steel sprockets utilize a process where only the teeth are high-frequency hardened, while the wheel body retains its tempered toughness. The teeth are wear-resistant and compression-resistant, while the wheel body has sufficient toughness to absorb impact, preventing tooth root fracture during heavy-load start-stop operations. The 42CrMo forged version further enhances resistance to alternating fatigue, making it suitable for continuous 24-hour operation.


Flexible Support for Both Raw Hole and Finished Hole Delivery Modes

Many competitors only produce finished hole sprockets. We also provide semi-finished raw hole steel sprockets with pre-machined allowances for the inner bore, allowing equipment manufacturers to machine the inner bore and keyway according to their own shaft specifications. This helps equipment manufacturers reduce spare parts inventory for different shaft diameters and is suitable for batch assembly. Repair customers can directly choose finished hole sprockets with keyways for immediate installation upon delivery.


Surface treatments can be selected as needed to suit different storage and on-site environments.

Steel sprockets are prone to oxidation and rust. We can provide customized treatments: rust-preventive oil, blackening, and bluing. For dry indoor warehouses, rust-preventive oil is sufficient; for open-air storage and damp workshops, use blackening to delay oxidation and rusting. Note: Blackening is only for rust prevention and is not suitable for environments with strong acids or alkalis.

Q1: How to choose between a 45# steel sprocket and a 42CrMo steel sprocket? 

A1: In general medium-load, normal temperature, and low-impact working conditions, 45# steel high-frequency quenching steel sprockets are cost-effective; in mining, hoisting, strong impact, frequent forward and reverse heavy-load conditions, 42CrMo forged steel sprockets are preferred, with stronger impact and fatigue resistance, and higher prices.

Q2: What secondary processing is required after receiving a raw steel sprocket?

A2: The teeth and outer diameter are already machined. Only the inner hole needs to be bored according to the equipment shaft diameter, the keyway needs to be machined, and the set screw holes need to be machined as needed. This is suitable for equipment manufacturers with many shaft diameter specifications who do not want to stock multiple types of pre-made sprockets; for repairs and replacements, it is recommended to directly purchase pre-made sprockets.

Q3: Do steel sprockets always require tooth surface hardening? Can they be used without hardening?

A3: Unhardened steel sprockets have low tooth hardness and wear quickly, making them suitable for low-speed, light-load, intermittent use. For continuous operation and medium-to-high load conditions, high-frequency hardening of the tooth surface is necessary; otherwise, the teeth will quickly wear down, becoming sharp blades that continuously cut and damage the chain.
