Product Introduction

What is a Planetary Drive Gearbox?

A planetary drive gearbox utilizes a classic coaxial transmission architecture consisting of a sun gear, planetary gears, and an internal ring gear. Power enters through the sun gear, is distributed across multiple planetary gears that mesh simultaneously to share the load, and is then output via the planet carrier. Available with either spur or helical gears, these units support modular configurations-ranging from one to three stages-and offer gear ratios from 3:1 to 1000:1. The helical gear version provides smoother meshing, higher rigidity, and lower noise, while the spur gear version offers an excellent balance of performance and cost, making it ideal for standard point-to-point positioning applications.
Designed specifically for use with servo and closed-loop stepper motors, these gearboxes feature gears that have undergone carburizing, quenching, and precision grinding. They offer selectable backlash grades and standardized flange interfaces, allowing for direct mounting to various brands of servo motors. Compared to worm gear or parallel-axis helical gearboxes, these units deliver higher torque density, a compact coaxial design, and superior transmission efficiency, making them the preferred reduction solution for precision servo motion control.

Features

1. Multi-planet load sharing for high torque density
Multiple planetary gears engage simultaneously, distributing the load evenly. This allows for a significantly higher torque capacity compared to conventional fixed-axis gearboxes of the same volume, resulting in a compact design ideal for automated systems with limited installation space.
2. Helical gear option for smooth operation and high rigidity
The helical gear version offers a higher contact ratio, leading to reduced impact, lower noise, and superior torsional rigidity. Alternatively, the spur gear version features a simpler, more cost-effective design-well-suited for applications with limited budgets that involve constant-speed, unidirectional transport.
3. Coaxial input and output for a streamlined layout
With the input and output shafts aligned on the same axis, there is no need to alter the direction of transmission. This facilitates direct connection to lead screws, rotary tables, or couplings, simplifying equipment design and reducing the complexity of alignment and calibration.
4. Modular interfaces for high adaptability
Equipped with standardized servo flanges and locking-style input mechanisms, these gearboxes can be quickly paired with various brands of servo motors or closed-loop stepper motors. Output options include keyed shafts, flanges, and splines; custom flanges, specialized shaft diameters, and unique gear ratios are also available upon request.

FAQ

Q1: What is the normal temperature range for a planetary gearbox housing?

A1: Under normal continuous operation, the temperature rise is generally ≤40K, with the housing temperature not exceeding 80°C. If the temperature exceeds this limit, you should check for potential issues such as overloading, abnormal lubrication, or poor heat dissipation.

Q2: Can the safety factor for selecting a planetary gearbox be reduced if it operates intermittently over a long period?

A2: If the operation involves intermittent starts and stops with a low load duty cycle, the safety factor may be moderately reduced. However, it is not advisable to lower it for applications involving frequent reversals or impact loads. Ideally, the selection should be calculated based on the load duration factor to prevent cumulative fatigue damage to the gears.

Q3: What is the function of a breather plug on a planetary gearbox, and can it be plugged shut?

A3: As the unit operates and heats up, the internal grease and air expand; the breather plug serves to balance the internal and external air pressure. If it is plugged shut, the internal pressure will rise, which can easily cause the oil seals to fail, resulting in oil leakage.
