Single Phase 5 Hp Motor
What is a Single Phase 5 Hp Motor?
The 5HP single-phase asynchronous motor-with a rated power equivalent to 3.7kW-is a medium-to-large-scale single-phase AC induction motor. It utilizes the principle of capacitive phase-splitting to generate a rotating magnetic field, allowing it to operate directly from a standard single-phase mains supply without the need for three-phase power. Unlike single-phase series-wound (universal) motors, this type lacks brushes and a commutator, resulting in more stable operation and longer maintenance-free intervals. Furthermore, it serves as an alternative to three-phase asynchronous motors, making it ideal for environments where three-phase infrastructure is unavailable, such as farms, small workshops, remote construction sites, or applications involving mobile equipment.
This series primarily features a "capacitor-start, capacitor-run" (dual-capacitor) configuration. The starting capacitor provides high starting torque; once the motor reaches 75%–80% of its synchronous speed, a centrifugal switch disconnects the starting capacitor. The running capacitor remains in the circuit to optimize the power factor and reduce operating temperatures. Available in versions supporting 50Hz/60Hz frequencies and 220V/230V/240V voltage ratings, these motors can be equipped with pulleys, couplings, or gearboxes, and are well-suited for continuous, stable load applications.

Features
1. Dual-capacitor design: balancing starting torque with continuous operating efficiency
The starting capacitor provides high torque for startup, making it suitable for loads that require starting under load, such as air compressors and crushers. The running capacitor remains engaged during operation, improving current phase, reducing reactive power loss, and lowering heat generation-resulting in a better power factor compared to single-capacitor motor designs.
2. Squirrel-cage rotor structure: no brush wear and high long-term reliability
The rotor features a cast-aluminum squirrel-cage induction design, eliminating the issue of carbon brush wear. It requires minimal maintenance under normal operating conditions; compared to single-phase series-wound (universal) motors, it offers a longer service life, virtually zero sparking, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI).
3. Stable constant-speed characteristics with minimal speed fluctuation
Due to the inherent slip characteristic of asynchronous motors, speed changes gradually in response to load variations. This makes them ideal for general-purpose machinery-such as water pumps, fans, and air compressors-that require a stable operating speed. They can be operated using simple on/off switches, without the need for complex drive systems.

FAQ
Q: What does the service factor of a 5HP single-phase motor signify, and how should it be used during motor selection?
A: The service factor is an indicator of a motor's short-term overload capacity. A standard service factor of 1.15 means the motor can operate at 115% of its rated load for a short duration. It should not be used as a justification for long-term overloading. For applications involving impact loads-such as air compressors or crushers-it is recommended to select a motor based on its rated power; do not rely on the service factor to sustain heavy loads over an extended period.
Q: Can a 5HP single-phase motor use a star-delta starter?
A: No. Star-delta starting is a reduced-voltage starting method designed for three-phase asynchronous motors. Single-phase capacitor-start/run motors lack three-phase windings and are therefore incompatible with this method; for reduced-voltage starting in such cases, a specialized single-phase autotransformer starter should be used instead.
Q: Is it a malfunction if the housing of a 5HP single-phase TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan-Cooled) motor gets very hot?
A: Under rated load and within the normal ambient temperature range, a high housing temperature is a normal part of the heat dissipation process. To determine if there is an actual issue, check whether the temperature rise or the current exceeds the values specified on the nameplate. If the motor heats up rapidly while running with no load, or if the current exceeds the rated limit, it typically indicates a faulty capacitor or poor insulation in the windings.
